Award for Chairman Oct 12
Our Chairperson and Secretary recently attended the National Historic Ship's annual award ceremony, held onboard HMS Belfast on the Thames. We are delighted to announce that our Chairman received second place in the category of "Volunteer of the year", presented by HRH Princess Anne. Normally, this category only has one winner, though with the judging panel’s decision so close a second prize was also awarded to Simon Sawers from the SS Explorer Preservation Society. As a volunteer for the society for nearly 15 years, Simon is now Society Chairman, actively leading the work to preserve and save this historic ship.
We are please to learn that the SS Freshspring, a former RMAS, steam driven water tanker is receiving some loving care. The Freshspring was completed in 1946 and seen service in Malta until the mid 70's when she was withdrawn. The ship has been languishing in a mud berth on the River Severn for circa 25 years. Several enthusiasts are currently forming a preservation society with the aim to restoring the Freshspring.
We have recently been in touch, and have offered our support and assistance where possible. It is our belief that historic ships and the societies concerned with them should stick together and support each other.
